NRT-HiPMD High PMD Fiber

NRT offers spools of High-PMD DSF for broadband test bed emulation of PMD.  This fiber was “saved from the dumpster” so that our customers can have access to 'bad' fiber with very high mean DGD coefficient.  This fiber has all of the statistical variations of in-ground high-PMD fiber for demonstration and experimentation.

The PMD of the NRT-HiPMD varies across the S, C and L bands. A typical DGD spectrum for the NRT-HiPMD is show below.  The DGD statistics of the NRT-HiPMD is Maxwellian as predicted by PMD theory with a mean DGD of about 42 ps.

HiPMD Fiber spool PMD spectra

Hi-PMD Fiber spool PMD spectra made with the NRT-JME. Shown is DGD vs. l, Depolarization vs. l, PDCD vs. l and the PSP spectrum on the Poincaré sphere.

The NRT-HiPMD can be respooled into smaller lengths decreasing the mean DGD (e.g. 3 ps, 5 ps, 8 ps, 10 ps, 15 ps, etc.) for various experimental investigations at the customer’s request.  The NRT-HiPMD does not replace the NRT-10033A or NRT-40133A PMDSs as the statistical nature of the NRT-HiPMD cannot produce quantitative information about the PMD tolerance of a system.  Rather the NRT-HiPMD is useful in simulations of high PMD fiber plant:

  • Concatenate spools to simulate multi-span network links,
  • Experiments on 'Hinge' model of PMD statistics,
  • PMD statistics and dynamics,
  • Loop experiments,
  • Interaction of PMD and non-linear effects with distributed PMD,
  • Fiber PMD tester verification using known statistical PMD artifact

DGD, SOPMD, & PDCD: Measured histograms and fit theoretical distributions. DGD Distribution fit to Maxwellian with  <t> = 41.84ps.  SOPMD distributions determined from <t> shows good fit to SOPMD data. (taken from Ibragimov, et.al.)

The statistical PMD distributions of DGD, SOPMD and PCDC were obtained from data taken on the NRT-HiPMD. This data, verifies the Maxwellian nature of the PMD statistics. Thus, the HiPMD fiber can be accurately represented by the term mean DGD, <t>, as described by the Joint Probability Density Function for DGD and SOPMD, NRT-JPDFC . For more information see the a publication of the study of the statistical PMD properties of this fiber: E.Ibragimov, G.Shtengel, S.Suh, and
M.Rivera, Statistical Correlation between First and Second Order PMD,
IEEE J.Lightwave Techn., vol.20, no.4, pp. 586-590, 2002.

NRT offers the NRT-HiPMD for rental on a monthly basis.
