NRT-TOPC Total Outage Probability Calculator

NRT's Total Outage Probability Calculator (NRT-TOPC) raises PMD specification to the same quantifiable level of other fiber optic transmission impairments. The NRT-TOPC eliminates the complicated statistical confusion associated with interpreting PMD test results; reducing all the information into a single number, understandable by engineers, technicians and managers.

Download the TOPC Demo for an example of the TOP Calculator.

NRT-TOPC

Single outage probability calculated by NRT-TOPC in minutes per year

This powerful tool combines:

  1. Measurement results from PMDS (e.g. NRT-10033A, NRT-40133A, NRT-PMDA) in the form (DGD, 2nd-order PMD, Penalty)
  2. Knowledge of the JPDF given by the mean fiber PMD, <t>
  3. Allowable OSNR penalty (margin)

to output the TOP. The TOP of the measured system for a fiber having PMD <t> is calculated from the integral across the outage regions in PMD space weighted by the JPDF.

TOP = dt dtw I(OSNR_Penalty) JPDF(t, tw :<t>)

I = 1 if OSNR_Penalty > Allowed Penalty, 0 otherwise

Download the NRT-TOP Demo to see how the system outage changes as (1) the maximum system penalty and (2) the mean fiber DGD are varied for a fixed set of test data.

Key Benefits

  • Single, Simple, Straightforward number for the performance degradation on a given fiber span.
  • Take the system data once, and use the NRT-TOPC to calculate performance in any situation.
  • Enables route engineering & span design for carriers. Just ask you vendors for their measurement data. You know the fiber plant.
  • Enables system design by the equipment manufacturers by adjusting the allowable margins for each wavelength.
