Polarization Controller Development Platform

NRT is offering a polarization controller development platform primarily aimed at polarization control experiments and prototyping projects. This package includes:

  • Unique Control Algorithm
  • Integrated-optic Lithium Niobate (LiNbO3) waveguide polarization controller
  • Drive amplifier unit for controller

LiNbO3 Polarization Controllers are known for their fast polarization response which is useful for tracking polarization as well as polarization scrambling. NRT is offering a development kit based on hardware and software developed originally for PMD compensation. This technology was the only one to be qualified for network deployment at multiple carriers around the world.

The NRT Control Algorithm control enables:

  • Virtually ideal polarization transformations
  • Accurate and truly 'Endless' control of polarization
  • Significant control improvement over other control algorithms
  • Virtually perfect SOP transformations with no dropouts or ‘glitches’
  • 10x speed improvement over other control algorithms
  • Leverages 4 years of PMD compensator control algorithm development

Below is a set up for to test polarization tracking and to compare control algorithms. The goal is for the control algorithm to very quickly adjust the polarization controller to minimize the light passing the polarizer and reaching the photodiode.

The results of this demonstration are shown below. The sophisticated algorithm offered by NRT
(at the left) is clearly able to track the scrambled input the optical polarization maintaining a tighter locus circle of output polarizations than other common tracking algorithms (on the right).

This basic set-up can also be used as the basis for an optical PMD compensator.
